The Agency has granted the project Innovative solutions for increased energy resilience Support from the European Regional Development Fund.
The project is led by AB Samarkand 2015 together with Smedjebacken municipality, VB Kraft, the University of Gävle and the Dalarna County Administrative Board. The project covers SEK 17.7 million and will contribute to developing and testing new solutions that strengthen society’s ability to cope with longer power outages and speed up the transition to fossil-free preparedness solutions.
The project runs from 2026–2029 and includes three practical test beds: Fossil-free island operation in Smedjebacken, further development of the test bed The power tank in Ludvika and a regional model for energy supply in the event of system collapse. In addition, digital resilience and cybersecurity are integrated as a central part of the work.
– Many smaller municipalities today lack robust and fossil-free solutions to maintain socially critical functions in longer power outages. This project takes a comprehensive approach to both technology, organization and collaboration. We look forward to together creating models that can be used throughout the region – and by extension nationally, says Linda Varga at Samarkand 2015, which ran the work with the project application.
In its justification for granting project funds, the Agency for Growth highlights the project’s strong collaboration structure, clear beneficial effects and potential. By combining technology solutions such as energy storage, advanced control and fossil-free reserve power with organizational development, follow-up research and competence-enhancing efforts, the project must create concrete benefits for municipalities, energy companies and residents.
During the project, a method template for small and medium-sized municipalities is also developed. The goal of this is to strengthen regional capabilities and create long-term sustainable models for increased energy resilience.
Preparedness issues are still high on the agenda and the project gathers competence from municipalities, power companies, energy companies, the University of Gävle and the Dalarna County Administrative Board to take on electricity supply for socially important functions in crisis.
The project is financed with support from the European Regional Development Fund and co-financing from Region Dalarna, Smedjebacken municipality and VB Kraft.
– The investment is a continuation of our attention-grabbing work with electricity and energy preparedness through the research projects where the power tank’s island operation is a test bed.
